Immunisation at an early age is highly recommended for all children. Immunisation helps children to protect them from the most serious childhood infections, some of which may threaten their lives.

In Malta, some immunisation are given free by the State. The Primary Child Health and Immunisation Unit is responsible for the primary health care and prevention of illness in children within the community. The services include the Well Baby Clinics, the National Immunisation Service and the School Health Service.
